What is Sea Moss?

It’s a type of algae (seaweed) native to the Atlantic shorelines of the Caribbean Islands, North America, & Europe. Sea Moss aka Irish Sea Moss by my Caribbean folks is an incredible superfood with a wide range of health benefits & uses; it can be added to smoothies, desserts & even used as a healthy vegan thickening agent.

Sea Moss is rich in sulfur, amino acids, vitamin A, vitamin C, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, & minerals. It actually contains 92 of the 102 minerals that our bodies need like zinc, iodine, iron, & more! It’s also an important source of plant-based collagen.

It helps soothe mucus membranes & rids your body of any excess mucus. It’s helpful in reducing congestion & clearing out phlegm buildup in the lungs. It’s also a pre-biotic & helps to get rid of bad bacteria in the gut for digestive health. Its high nutrient concentration is great for boosting your immune system, energy, & libido. Used as a mask helps improve eczema, psoriasis, & acne outbreaks. It can also be used as a hair mask to nourish hair.

Gel Instructions:
Remove moss (make sure your sea moss is certified organic) from the package, it will have a slight ocean smell. Place your sea moss in a large bowl, cover it with filtered or spring water. (Do not use tap water) & massage the sea moss removing any sand & debris. I recommend cleaning it twice.

After cleaning make sure all the parts of the sea moss are covered with water & soak for 8-12hrs.

After soaking remove the sea moss from the liquid, & transfer it to a plate. Do not discard the water because this water, which now contains tons of nutrients from the sea moss, will be used to make the gel.

Add 1 cup of sea moss & 2 cups of your sea moss water to a high-powered blender. Add less water if you want a thicker gel.

Blend until it’s smooth, about 2 min. Transfer Sea Moss to an airtight container & refrigerate. The gel will thicken in the fridge after 2 hrs.

It can last in the fridge for 2-3 weeks. Stored in the freezer for up to 3 months. You can pour it into an ice-cube tray & freeze it for later use. It’s perfect for throwing them into your smoothies. Use 1-2 tbsp of gel for smoothies. Use as face & hair masks.
